Greece Riots 2011

“Greece: A Study in Contrasting Views”

These photographs were taken during a study abroad art program in June 2011. They show the economic turmoil in Greece and the struggle of the people.

Each day our drawing class would walk to ancient archeological sites and picturesque landscapes to sketch the beauty of Greece in the warm summer sun, but on the way home, I saw a much different view–one under great pressure and strife.

These photographs, taken with an iPhone and small point-and-shoot camera, document the demonstrations and riots in Greece. Images from a peaceful demonstration march, a riot between police and anarchists, and the chair left behind a small family owned bakery that went out of business reveals the evidence of harsh economic times and political strife in their country.
